Snoring can be the cause of some pretty significant arguments in a relationship. In fact it has been shown to be one of the biggest causes of rows between couples.

But there are some simple lifestyle changes that you can make to help stop you or your other half from snoring.

Alcohol has been scientifically proven to increase the risk of snoring, it does this by causing the muscles of the oropharynx to relax and this results in snoring. It also irritates the lining of the nasal passages and causes congestion, all of these will increase snoring.

The best thing to do is try to cut out alcohol completely because this is the only way to stop it from happening. But if you do not want to cut alcohol out completely then you need to restrict the amount that you drink and make sure that you do not drink any alcohol, for at least four hours before you go to bed. This will give the alcohol time to get out of your system.

When the nasal passages are restricted in some way, this will normally result in snoring. Nasal passages are small strips that are places at the bottom of the bridge of the nose. They help to widen the nasal passages allowing more air to enter and stopping them from collapsing and causing snoring.

Most people snore whilst lying flat on their backs, use a V pillow or your normal pillows to help prop yourself up and reduce the risk of snoring.

Many people believe that it is a myth that sleeping on your side stops you from snoring but it is true. Try sewing cotton reels to your back to help make sure you stay on your side.

Avoid sleeping pills as these act in much the same way as alcohol. They cause the muscles to relax increasing the risk of them collapsing and you snoring.

Talk to your dentist about a jaw support. This is an anti snoring device which is applied to the jaw in the evening to help stop the jaw from sliding back.

Allergies are a very common cause of snoring, speak to your doctor about taking prescribed anti histamines. This may help to relieve any nasal congestion or collapsed airways.

Smoking has been scientifically proven to increase the risk of snoring. Try to cut out smoking completely, see your doctor for support.

Lose weight. this will help reduce the size of your palate. This will help you to stop snoring.
