Experts believe that the number of women suffering in silence with post natal depression is as many as 4 in 10. This could be because the symptoms are simply brushed aside as hormones or because many women are reluctant to seek help because they believe they will be seen as an unfit mother.

Recognising the signs of post natal depression is essential because like any form of depression, the earlier it is caught, the better.

The symptoms below can be indicators of post natal depression, but the symptoms can vary from person to person. If you believe you or someone you know is suffering with post natal depression then please contact a health professional.

All new mothers are prone to outbursts of crying and emotional displays, it is perfectly natural due to an increase in hormones, a lack of sleep and worry. But consistent crying and crying over unimportant things can be a sign of depression.

One of the most common symptoms of post natal depression is a lack of interest or enthusiasm in the new baby. The new mother may not want to talk to or about the baby and they may ignore its cries.

They may also lose interest in themselves and go for a couple of days without showering or brushing their teeth.

New mothers ave virtually no sleep, so irritability will not seem particularly abnormal to the outside world. But if their irritable moods last for longer than a few days then it could be a sign of post natal depression.

Panic attacks are another symptom, most women will show anxiety about their new baby. But physical symptoms such as sweating, shaking and increased heart rate are all signs of panic which is much more serious.

Feeling lonely and low are also common symptoms, but if someone you know is suffering from these feelings, they are unlikely to tell you.

If you believe you or anyone that you know is suffering with post natal depression then you must consult with a medial professional. These feelings can not be beaten by sheer force of will, the risk is too great. Talking to a doctor or nurse is safe, nobody will judge you and nobody will tell anybody else. But they will help you get through this tough time.
